Dock + Finder
The Dock in Mac OS X provides fast, one-click access to frequently used applications, folders, and even downloads from the Internet. The Finder makes working with your files and documents as easy as browsing your iTunes library.

What is the Dock?
The Dock at the bottom of the screen gives you quick access to your most frequently used applications and files. With its visually appealing, high-resolution icons, the Dock practically begs to be clicked. You can create as many stacks as you wish simply by dragging folders to the right side of your Dock.

Introducing the Finder.
The Finder is like home base for your Mac. Represented by the blue icon with the smiling face, it's one of the first things you see when you start working on your Mac. Meet the sidebar.
The sidebar in the Finder window is your starting point when browsing your Mac. If you've used iTunes, you'll feel right at home. If you're not using the applications, you can still find messages, contacts, and appointments by using Spotlight search in the menu bar. Start typing a search term and Spotlight returns the related items immediately.

Spotlight technology helps you organize your mail and contacts in another big way: Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes. You simply select the relevant criteria--say, every contact with a birthday in the next 30 days or every email sent by your boss--and your applications create a folder containing every item that meets your criteria. Best of all, the folders stay updated as new items are created. Smart Groups in Address Book appear in your Group list, and Smart Mailboxes in Mail appear just below your inboxes.

Fully integrated.
Because they're Mac OS X applications, Mail, iCal, and Address Book are fully integrated with each other and with other features of your Mac. For example, Mail and iCal use the contacts in your Address Book, so you can quickly send messages or invitations to individuals and groups. Mail can access your iPhoto library, so it's easy to email pictures to your friends and family. iPhoto makes managing your photos as easy as taking them. It helps you organize your photos so you can find them fast. Edit them so they look their best. And share them with your friends and family.

Organize by who, where, and when.
It's so easy to take digital photos that before you know it, you have thousands. iPhoto gives you more ways to keep track of your photos by organizing them according to who's in your pictures, where you took them, and when you took them.

Faces to see.
iPhoto '09 introduces Faces: a new feature that automatically detects and even recognizes faces in your photos. iPhoto uses face detection to identify faces of people in your photos and face recognition to match faces that look like the same person. That makes it easy for you to add names to your photos. And it helps you find the people you're looking for. Clicking the Faces view shows you a corkboard featuring a snapshot for each person you've named. iPhoto suggests a set of possible matches you can confirm with a click.

Places to go.
Places allows you to search and sort photos by location, using data from any GPS-enabled camera or iPhone. Don't have a GPS-enabled camera or iPhone? You can still use Places by adding your own location information: Just start typing and iPhoto instantly gives you a list of locations to choose from. Want to add places to lots of photos? Select an Event, an album, or a group of photos shot in the same place, and iPhoto can add your location information to all of them at once.

When you feel like exploring, click Places to navigate your photos by location. Find photos on a map, or use the column browser to click through location names from country to state to city--right down to points of interest like the Empire State Building or the Grand Canyon--to see all the photos taken there.

Events to remember.
iPhoto helps eliminate clutter in your photo library by automatically organizing your photos by Event. When you import photos taken on a single day, iPhoto groups them together as an Event. You can label each Event with a meaningful name like "Karen's wedding" or "Nathan's graduation," so you can find everything easily.

The search field in iPhoto lets you search your entire photo library fast. Type a word or part of a word to search by person, location, title, album, event, or keyword, and see your results in an instant.

Make some improvements.
Turn so-so snapshots into great photos.
iPhoto gives you everything you need to fix your photos. Remove red-eye with a click. Adjust exposure, brightness, and contrast. Crop to frame your subject. If you don't know where to begin, click the Enhance tool and watch iPhoto automatically fix bright or dull photos. Then try a few new tricks.

If you want to make the colors in your photos pop without affecting skin tones, use the Saturation slider and click "Avoid saturating skin tones." To improve clarity and enhance detail, experiment with the Definition slider. Or retouch over solid edges with the Retouch brush. Its new Detect Edges setting prevents blurring of detail as you paint out spots and blemishes.

Experiment with effects.
iPhoto also features fun, one-click photo effects. Open the Effects pane and click a thumbnail image to convert color photos to black and white, give them a classic sepia tone, add a vignette border, and more. Experiment without fear: A click of the center thumbnail removes effects and returns your photo to its original state. In fact, any edit you make in iPhoto is reversible, so you don't have to worry about losing your originals.

Enjoy a few choice memories.
Looking for a fun way to share and enjoy your photos? Try creating a slideshow using new slideshow themes. Each theme includes professionally designed layouts, titles, and transitions that make a perfect backdrop for your photos. Click a theme to play a full-screen slideshow--accompanied by any song from your iTunes library. Fast-forward or rewind your slideshow using the new filmstrip. If you like, customize your slideshow even further by saving it as a project. Then you can reorder photos, set the length of time individual photos remain onscreen, or, with some themes, choose different transitions. And when you're happy with your slideshow, send it to iTunes and sync it to your iPhone or iPod to enjoy anywhere.

With full-screen browsing, you can flip through your entire video library using Cover Flow--the same way you flip through albums in iTunes. When you roll over a filmstrip, you see the related clip full screen.

Customize your DVD.
If you're more the hands-on type, iDVD gives you lots of options for further customizing your DVD.

Make a scene.
Choose an iMovie project as your next iDVD project and you can add a scene selection menu. iDVD automatically imports iMovie chapter markers and uses them to create your scene selections. For each chapter marker on the timeline, iMovie adds a thumbnail of the scene and an editable chapter title (such as "Blowing out the Candles" or "You May Kiss the Bride").

Edit the chapter title in iMovie and you'll have less work to do later, as iDVD picks up the chapter titles for its scene selection buttons.

Refreshingly, this approach focuses not only on technical tactics, but also on the reasons why SEO is important beyond just achieving high rankings in search engine results—things like business goals, creating appealing marketing messages and designing human-usable web sites.
The book also avoids SEO techniques du jour, the kinds of tactics that are hotly debated in forums and that may or may not have any effect on your overall success. Rather, the book focuses on a solid, fundamental approach using time-tested techniques that work regardless of seemingly arbitrary algorithmic changes by the search engines.
The book is also very well written, using SEO-specific jargon only when necessary and always making sure to introduce new terms in clear English (there's also an excellent glossary at the end of the book).
The first part of the book focuses on an area many newcomers totally neglect, often to their detriment: laying an effective foundation for your SEO efforts. You need to clarify your goals and really have an understanding of the fundamentals of how search engines work and what types of SEO activities do (and don't) work before plunging in to your work.
And for anyone that works in an organization, the next key step is to create a strategy that works with your existing marketing, information technology, sales and other groups to make sure your SEO efforts support the overall goals of the entire team. Part two of the book focuses on developing this strategy, and also offers suggestions on working with other groups and selling them on the importance of effective SEO.
Only when this important groundwork has been established should you begin the actual work of keyword selection and optimization, link building and so on.
That's the focus of part three—developing and implementing a comprehensive SEO plan for your web site. This section takes a common-sense approach breaking the search engine optimization efforts for your web site into a 12-week process, and as the subtitle implies, dedicating an hour a day during this period to a specific goal-based task.
The authors provide useful tools for managing this process, in the form of spreadsheet-based worksheets to help you plan and organize your various tasks. Again, the emphasis is on providing simple but effective tools that someone new to the process can use. That said, these worksheets are truly useful, and you may find them becoming integral parts of your overall SEO toolkit.
Throughout the book the authors offer useful tips as asides. "Pearls of wisdom" tips are obviously tactics gleaned from experience, while "slacker" tips are great for letting you know when you can get away with less work or when you shouldn't obsess over a certain activity.
There are also longer case studies and expert opinions from other well-known SEOs such as Aaron Wall and Patricia Fusco scattered throughout the book.
In all, Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day is an excellent overview of SEO and provides solid advice and guidance for anyone just getting started. The book is also useful if you've done SEO in the past but haven't kept up with the current state of search engines and the kinds of SEO techniques that work today (and want to know what to avoid to stay out of trouble). Biographer of Phil Spector (He's a Rebel), among others, Ribowsky takes a dishy, insider look at Berry Gordy's making of the Supremes, with some nasty swipes at Diana Ross while elevating Flo Ballard as the trio's martyr. In his detailed look at how Berry engineered his Motown empire, thanks to his smart sisters and a lot of luck and fortuitous pairing of talent, Ribowsky nicely intersperses some hindsight reflections by the main players, such as the brothers Brian and Eddie Holland of the legendary songwriting team with Lamont Dozier, with comparative accounts by Mary Wilson, Ross and others in order to sift the truth from the legend. While the author constantly snipes at Ross for her popping eyes and naked ambition, it was largely her single-minded drive that garnered attention to the trio's early incarnation as the Primettes, and her high girl-woman singing voice that established the Supremes' distinctive sound. Moreover, Ross's influence on Gordy (and his faith in her future solo stardom) motivated him to keep pushing the group into the limelight, in spite of other girl groups that had a bigger top hit following, such as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. In this engaging, vivacious account, Ribowsky energetically and thoroughly underscores the Supremes' significance as one of the first crossover successes. (July)

But this doesn't stop his movies from being effective thrill-rides, and Taken is no exception. Taken pays just enough attention to the illusion of procedure--making it seem like Mills knows all the right steps to track down his daughter--that the movie cheerfully seduces your suspension of disbelief, despite many plot holes and scenes where Mills doesn't get scratched despite bullets flying in all directions or pretends to be a French policeman despite not speaking French or even adopting a French accent.
